Microsoft Vs Google. The battle of supremacy.

War of Geeks. The Mahabharat of Software World.
The corporate biggies are getting sleepless nights... they are getting frustrated. Who will win? The nerds favorite "Google" or the dummies favorite "Microsoft"?
Some tasty excerpts from the rediff article.

I will bury them. I have done it before, I will kill them, he said. He was not finished, however. He threw a chair across the boardroom in sheer frustration.'
Where is this from? A Hollywood film starring Michael Douglas? (etc.)
No. It is actually from a court testimony concerning -- hold your breath, as they say -- Microsoft's Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer, the man next only to God in the computer corporate hierarchy, next only to the omnipresent and omniscient Bill Gates.
Who is this rage directed against?
Hold your breath again… in case you have let it out in the meanwhile. He is talking about Eric Schmidt the chief of Google, the enfant terrible of the computer industry.

Think of Gates making $300 a second in his working life. As the joke goes, it is not worthwhile for him to bend to pick up a hundred dollar note lying on a street as he gets to work, because he will be loosing $800 in the three seconds it would take him to do that.

This episode reminds me of the movie "Antitrust" *ing Tim Robbins, Ryan Phillippe, Rachel Leigh Cook & Claire Forlani.

Who do you think will win this war?

Rich Karlgaard has a great piece in Forbes re: "talent wars" - as he tells it, microsoft is fighting the same battle for talent that it was 12 years ago

"flying on the delta shuttle with bill gates 12 years ago, i asked, 'what microsoft competitor worries you the most?'

'goldman sachs.' i gave gates a started look. was microsoft about to try the investment banking business? 'software,' he said, 'is an iq business. microsoft must win the iq war, or we won't have a future. i don't worry about lotus or ibm, because the smartest guys would rather come work for microsoft. our competitors for iq are investment banks such as goldman sachs and morgan stanley."

12 years later, microsoft faces a new formidable challenger in the talent wars: google.

"along comes google with its revenue run rate of $6 billion and abotu 4,000 employees. google's sales per employee are $1.5 million, or 2 times that of microsoft. that is like comparing babe ruth to home run baker. google now beat microsoft in the talent war."

ouch

"at google one works to change the world; at microsoft one work to protect the windows and office profit margins. which mission do you think high-iq people prefer?"

the broader point, which should every company in every industry needs to pay attention to, is that the smartest team wins. period. as i like to say, few companies ever failed by hiring too many smart people.

are "talent wars" for real? well, just ask the vp of marketing or vp of engineering or vp of sales who is trying to lure the best and brightest to join their team. if you're not actively recruiting (and retaining) the best, you can be darn sure your competitor is.
