Shantaram, the movie!
As much I am looking forward to the movie "The Da Vinci Code", I will now look forward to the movie "Shantaram". It has been recently announced and Johnny Depp has been signed on to play Shantaram.
Now, who the hell is this Shantaram? Shantaram was a South Mumbai Goon who has since reformed. Originally an Australian christened as Gregory John Peter Smith, Shantaram was the name given by the mother of his closest friend in India. He was called as Lin or Linbaba amongst his gangster peers. After several imprisonment terms served by him and after his final release, he changed his name to Gregory David Roberts, in honour of his mother.

Gregory wrote a self titled biography with details of his experiences. It is a gripping book for anyone who seeks to read about Mumbai's underworld and what murky dealings take place day in and day out. He has engaged himself in every single vice imaginable. And he is also proof that within every bad man resides a good person. What he has managed to do after he has reformed is something remarkable. Shantaram, the book, itself is his third complete attempt to write his story, as the first 2 attempts were destroyed. Quite an example of true determination!

ferro, when i first heard abt the book "shantaram" i thought it was v shantaram's biography. turned out to be something else altogether.
I read about this movie being made only because Johny Depp is starring in it. Otherwise, this Shantaram guy was totally unknown, unlike the Chota Shakeels and Chota Rajans of the underworld who are usually in the limelight most of the times. Maybe this guy was just a henchman who has romanticized his underworld days and made it big time.
Whatever, am keenly waiting for the movie to be released.

I have this book with me, but haven't read it yet. I started to read the book, but kinda lost interest after the first few pages. Let me read it now and Ill post my thoughts about it over the weekend.
