SA make history!

When Australia (Aus.) scored 434/4 in 50 overs, little would have anyone thought that South Africa (SA) would answer them back in same measure. Even lesser would have thought that SA could win. Aus scored a massive 434, riding high on Pontings epic 165 in 105 balls. But Gibbs seemed to have other plans. He practically wrote SA victory with his 175 off 111 balls. And in the end, Mark Boucher played an innings of calm and composure to take his home team past the victory rope with a grand 50 off 43 balls!

Herschelle Gibbs, arms aloft, celebrates his hundred. He was finally dismissed for 175 brilliant runs, South Africa v Australia, 5th ODI, Johannesburg, March 12, 2006

I was messaging with Maverick through the match and at one point told him that SA should win this match and take the revenge of the semi-final loss to Australia in World Cup 1999. That was too sad a loss even though the match was drawn. Klusener's last minute pyrotechnics could not save the match. Today, Gibbs and Boucher left no stone unturned.

Hats off to SA team and Aus team. A record 872 runs scored between the 2 teams, A record first innings score of 434 posted by Aus... and finally... a RECORD SETTING CHASE of 438 runs. MAN! THAT WAS SOME MATCH!!!

More tomorrow when I study the stats carefully, with lots of assistance from Maverick. Till then... adios!

PS:
1. By the way, Muthiah can take solace in the fact that he is no longer the most expensive bowler in ODI history with his 99 runs condeded in 10 overs. Lewis today conceded 113 runs in 10 overs.
2. From Cricinfo.com >> "This match is certainly the equal of the "Humdinger" match played at Port Elizabeth in 1986-87"... I need to do some digging now...

Update on Mar 13th:
Cricinfo has put a comprehensive listing of all records on their site. Click here to directly go that page.
A quick look at the most interesting records mentioned on that page...
1. With 26 towering hits, this match holds the record for the most sixes hit in a match.
2. The blistering innings from Gibbs and Ponting ranks them in the top-3 most explosive knocks by batsmen scoring above 130 runs in their innings.

And that "Humdinger" match - I found a link on The Hindu. Check it out here.

Sorry Rubic but the link you have was for the Ashes Test in 2005 and not 1986 as mentioned in CricInfo. Also Port Elizabeth is in South Africa which can't have a link to Ashes. Although Ashes 2005 match is called Humdinger its not the same one as mentioned on CricInfo.

and sorry this is the actual match HumDinger which cricinfo was referring to. This was from a rebel series between Australia and South Africa. This was called Humdinger because chasing 316 Australia were 298 for 2 in 44th Over but were All out on 310 in 49.5 overs handing SA the victory. Hope this helps.
