What kind of national headline is this?

There are zillions who get affected by gastroenteritis based illnesses. Does the world bother to catch wind of them and report? Does anybody even bother to report poor sanitation that results in so many unnecessary deaths? No. Why? Nobody is interested to know. Nobody wants to read sad stuff.

One celebrity becomes ill. It becomes national headlines. Ok, Amitabh is a great actor, and an ambassador of sorts for the country. Yet, a national headline of this sort? All news channels, all headlines of major papers... the pic of Big B cooped up in the back seat of a car, being carried to a hospital on a stretcher...

Dharavi mein kisko colitis hua
Kisi ko nahin hai pata
Ek Big B ko ho gaya
Sab ne saans thaam ke dekha!

(a parody on "Jungle Mein Mor Naacha" from Madhumati)

Hmmmm...

Swan Lake

India got a creditable win yesterday against the Proteas. Toughly fought match though it was, I thought there were a lot of life savers - lapse of fielding from SA side. Nevertheless a good win. I kinda thought as much that Yuvi would get out before 50 and it happened just that way. That was such a wasted shot. Getting out on 49 or 99 can be so disappointing.

This picture appeared in today's edition of The Hindu. Looking at the picture reminded me of a ballet performance to the song "Danse Profane" by Debussy Claude Achille or "Swan Lake" by Tchaikovsky. Doesn't it appear like they are happily dancing like some birds? :-))

ghoti = fish

My grandfather and myself were discussing something about English language when the discussion turned towards pronunciation. In came George Bernand Shaw. He had laid a lot of emphasis on pronunciation. Infact, after he passed away, he left a lot of estate for some research on English language. Anyways... it all culminated in the above equation. The word "ghoti" can be pronounced as "fish". Puzzled? Even I was... until my grandfather explained how it can be done so.

ghoti = gh + o + ti

Say the "gh" like in "cough". It sounds like "f".
Say the "o" like in "women" (wimen). It sounds like "i".
Say the "ti" like in "condition". It sounds like "sh".

Let's put them together. f + i + sh. There you go...

GHOTI = FISH!

Where will the NetCafes go now?

While we laud the recent developments in the communication infrastructure that has led to availability of Broadband in our homes (this post is also being done from home - courtesy bharti broadband)... we seldom stop to think of the scenario that existed just 5 years ago. We used to frequent netcafes and get our internet work done from machines set up in "booths". :-)... This rediff article set me thinking as to what ever would happen to these cafes? Well, adopting to change is how a business can survive. And it remains to be seen how these netcafes can battle it out with the Broadband ISPs.

What do you think should these netcafe owners do?

Some people can be real lunatics and get away with it as well.

I remember that most flights, whether domestic or international, are non-smoking flights. Here is an example of some high bred lunacy. Opening the aircraft door inflight...? I think this beats just about every other case of lunacy!! And just see what the lawyer claims?

Momentary lapse of reason? One slip?? :-))

Chinnaswamy Stadium & Alien Invasion.

I was returning from someplace near Majestic and took the route via Kasturba Road leading into MG Road. Lots of traffic at the Jewels De Paragon signal. I just clicked this snap from a distance. The glow of the flood lits had illuminated the entire place. Infact at the signal, it felt like it was daytime.

From where I took this snap, the beams looked very ethereal. Somehow felt like some alien invasion had taken place and the light beams from a spaceship were glowing down upon Earth... :-))

Too much imagination? I agree...

How has the Internet changed your life?

How has the Internet changed your life?

I have wondered about this quite a few times. Emailing. Photo sharing. Writing. Reading. Researching. Searching. Chatting. Messaging. Blogging. Info Sharing. Partying. Auctioning. Product Ordering. Ticketing... what else? Just about everything I usually do in a day... except the essentials... :-)

How has it been for you?

One of the best quotes I have read!

I do not know who said this. If you know, please let me know.

There is a lot of good in the worst of us
And a lot of bad in the best of us
That it is not given to any of us
To judge the rest of us!
~ Anon.

Shared with me by my grandfather. It was one of lovely talks that we were into. And this gem of a quote just came out of his memory. The simplicity and the lyrical beauty just hits me straight. I remember reading it in some book that we should always grant the benefit of doubt in favour of the other person, when our mind is in conflict over a right or a wrong. I practice this every moment and it has left me immensely peaceful. Maybe you could also just give it a thought and practice it.

Peace \/ !!

Drive safe

Folks!

One of my good friends just went through a very bad car crash yesterday. He was waiting at a signal and a loaded truck rammed into him at high speed. Another 4 cars were involved in the accident. The way the car got screwed up made me think of the horror that he has gone through. Mere imagination of myself in his place gave me goosebumps, let alone the fear and everything else.

After reviewing everything, what came out clearly was that he was saved from any injury because he was strapped to his seat. I wear my seat belt all the times. Whether I am driving or I am a front passenger. I get ridiculed at times. I dont care. I just want to wear it, as I dont feel good otherwise. Now, I just want to wear it because I know I would be safer strapped to my seat than otherwise.

Requesting all of you reading this post to please take care while driving and dont forget to strap yourself with your seat belt.

Your life is important. For you are the universe to somebody, including yourself!

Google's PageRank

The chill is beginning to set in, heralding the onset of colder climes. But then, this information may not be relevant to you. It is only as relevant as your location. If you are located in Bangalore or North Eastern US or Europe (not the Mediterranean area)... this is relevant. Maybe not otherwise...especially if you are in Melbourne or Cape Town or the Tropics. This is when the sun and the sands would beckon you! "Christmas at the beach" - sounds awkward to the people from Northern Hemisphere. Not if you are in the Southern Hemisphere. How you wish there was a ranking available to suggest what is relevant and when it is relevant?

The above reminds me of the classy technology that Google offers. PageRank. Which is the best page for your search and which is not? How would you know? PR gives you that data. Have you ever used it to your advantage? Typically, we do not even look at that data. Today, web sites are custom created to get higher page ranks and therefore more page hits. It is therefore only more imperative that we give this little diminutive data a little more than just a casual look. Check this page for information on how PageRank works.

Also, there is another school of thought that says is PR just democracy or corporate muscle. Merits a read!

Best Search Engines on the Web

Today morning, I was experiencing some problems loading the Google homepage. I do not know why. But it made me think whatever happened to Google's super scalable architecture. Or maybe the DNS was slow in responding... no idea yet!

However, it did prompt me to find out what are the alternatives available. I drew a complete blank. As for more than 4 years now, I have looked up information on the web only via Google. Nothing else.

I quote... It is only when the usual does not work do we think of an alternative. Quite true if you really ponder about it.

Check what I found out : The Best Search Engines. Did you really ever think so much before selecting a search engine? :-) I did not. Till today. The above link was yielded by Yahoo! Search.

Well, what do I say? I have found a rainy day option? Maybe!

Does "No Parking" mean you can park?

Found this on a street off Ulsoor Road, Bangalore. I dont know how this symbol can be read any other way.

I got a no-parking ticket in a parking area a few days back. I am sure I did not park long over there. How much does 20 minutes seem to you? Am still coming to terms with it. How could I get a parking ticket in that spot, when I have not got any ticket whenever I have parked my car at the same place for over a year now? No clue. Am planning to take it up with the RTO.

Lesson learnt: Even in a proper parking space, do not park the car if it the only car in that space.

Nice way to convey that the penguin now runs inside an IBM eServer

Art & Archeology

I was making a picture CD of the pictures clicked at Belur, Halebid, Somnathpur and Sringeri. All these temples are living examples of Hoysala Architecture. I was hopping around in internet looking for a link that explained the architecture of these temples in a detailed manner. Forunately I found a very beautiful comprehensive site. Check this site. http://www.art-and-archaeology.com/

Check the Hoysala temples on this link

Microsoft Vs Google. The battle of supremacy.

War of Geeks. The Mahabharat of Software World.
The corporate biggies are getting sleepless nights... they are getting frustrated. Who will win? The nerds favorite "Google" or the dummies favorite "Microsoft"?
Some tasty excerpts from the rediff article.

I will bury them. I have done it before, I will kill them, he said. He was not finished, however. He threw a chair across the boardroom in sheer frustration.'
Where is this from? A Hollywood film starring Michael Douglas? (etc.)
No. It is actually from a court testimony concerning -- hold your breath, as they say -- Microsoft's Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer, the man next only to God in the computer corporate hierarchy, next only to the omnipresent and omniscient Bill Gates.
Who is this rage directed against?
Hold your breath again… in case you have let it out in the meanwhile. He is talking about Eric Schmidt the chief of Google, the enfant terrible of the computer industry.

Think of Gates making $300 a second in his working life. As the joke goes, it is not worthwhile for him to bend to pick up a hundred dollar note lying on a street as he gets to work, because he will be loosing $800 in the three seconds it would take him to do that.

This episode reminds me of the movie "Antitrust" *ing Tim Robbins, Ryan Phillippe, Rachel Leigh Cook & Claire Forlani.

Count your blessings. You will know you are truly blessed!

Many a times in our lives, we come across a situation that made us think "How can something like this happen to me? I must be the most unfortunate person alive, right now!". We also seem to resort to that comfort zone where we pity ourselves and wallow in it.

Want to know the truth? You are blessed despite all this! Why? You have to know what is being truly unfortunate. It is like experiencing hell right here on Earth. Check the story below. It happened in United States - the most powerful nation in the world, the nation that has the most richest people on earth, the nation that prides itself on being so developed. And when such a nation can have such an appalling case within its people... where can you count yourself?

A Baby's Death, Grim as the Life of His Mother - New York Times

About 2 years back, after a prayer meeting evening, I had the opportunity to talk with an uncle of my friend who stays in New Jersey. He mentioned something that I have not forgotten to this day. The title of this post is what I heard from him. If we really start counting our blessings, you will know how fortunate are you to have all the good things that you have in your life. Good Parents, Good Family, Good Upbringing, Good Education, Good Job, Good Friends... and if you are married, a Good Wife and if you have children... Good Children... just so many...!!

Just think about all these and think about the plight of Tracina Vaughn. You will know that you are truly blessed.

God Bless You!

Its emotional to leave the place that you have literally lived through...

Most of us change homes, migrate to new cities, change office buildings, jump companies... and the like. All the while, we retain a piece of the old chip with us. May be good memories or otherwise. Sometimes, we grow so comfortable in the setting that moving out of it is a big ordeal for us.

Change is the only constant in life, someone said. Dealing with change is what life is mostly about. Anyways, before I launch out on a full blown philosophical rhetoric... I will stop.

Check the link below.
Fish Market's Salty Souls Bid South St. a Misty Adieu - New York Times

It was a place they all despised. It stinked. It was raw. Weather was cruel. And yet when they had to leave... they kinda realised that they loved the place so much. It had become a integral part of their lives.

Which place do you think has left such an impression on you? For me, it was TIFR, Mumbai and NCST, Bangalore. Both gave such wonderful experiences for me that I call them my golden years when I was a bachelor.

Post marriage, I am waiting to see something like platinum. For everything is golden. :-) (No, I am not maska maro-fying anybody! Honest!!)

You really should have strong guts to say a damn good lie. Literally!!

They always said... bravery, courage, facing adversity, being honest, taking flak... everything required a lot of guts. Even saying a damn good lie required guts. They did not say things like these just like that. Probably they knew. And now there is a scientific proof.

Check this link to know more.

Be careful next time when you say you have a lot of guts. People may just start trusting you less... ;-)

Why Rubella is a serious issue?

Firstly, do you know what Rubella is? It is one of severe infections which couples or women need to vaccinate themselves against before going in for pregnancy. Pregnancies that get impacted by Rubella are at best terminated. For more information on Rubella, read here. I read about all these when my wife was in her first trimester.

Initially I thought how can a person sue a doctor for wrongfully giving life. But then after I read the article, I can understand - yes, this is a serious issue.

Girl wants to sue Dr for being born

From when does the "Right to Life" become prevalent? Right from the moment of conception? I am divining on this now...

It's aimed at Hindus: Says Bajrang Dal on sterlization.

Check this link. It appeared in the morning at the Indian Express website.

When I say "vested interests" thwart genuine attempts by the government to roll out a social health initiative, this is a classic example.

BD has been vehement in their activities to continue with the Hindu-Muslim divide. I guess these guys would not have even checked up the complete records before raising their voice. They just need an excuse to show they are at something.

And the Waqf board will raise its voice if mostly muslims are invited for this camp!

All these BD, Waqf... they will not rest until a partition like 1947 happens. Nonsense!!

Now, doctors can prescribe video games as medication!

Attention deficit disorder? Try video games | CNET News.com

I always wondered where diverse technologies will merge together to form one integrated life solution. PS2s are being used for treating attention deficit disorders. Who would have thought that PS2s can be used in treating a condition?

On the hindsight, our lives are becoming more and more technology dependent. Our grandfathers and parents came from a generation where a lot of tasks were done by themselves and nature had answers to most health problems. Today, we are moving away from the lap of nature to the bosom of technology... and seeking solace in anything that is electrical/electronic!

My grandfather calls computers the "modern idiot box". After a prolonged thought, and a recent 9 day vacation when I did not touch my laptop, I am tending to agree. :-)

Who are they to laud us for our governance?

My first reaction upon reading this link was "Who are they to laud us for our governance?". Check this link to see what I mean...India lauded for religious inclusion

Disclaimer: Opinions expressed herein are purely mine and do not represent the opinions of anybody else or the organization that I work for.

India, the land that has been the melting pot of cultures, is the living example of how democracy can exist conveniently in a nation filled with cultures that change every 10 kms.

Since time immemorial, this land has withstood invasion after invasion and all the wealth plundered to enrich the coffers of some distant land/ruler. Many of the issues that currently plague India are the legacy (the hindi word "viraasat" seems more appropriate to me) left behind by the various colonial rulers who conquered and looted India.

Primary among those issues is this communal divide (read "Divide and Rule" policy). More significant between Hindus and Muslims than any other religious group. What has added fuel to the fire through the times can be attributed to many factors, some of which include vested interests of foreign nations and also political ambitions of village yokels who are sitting in the parliament!

While the worst face was projected to the media (as it always does... elaborate everything to a measure of superlative exaggeration), not much was said or printed about how different families from either religions sheltered and cared for the members of the other religion in such trying times. What happened in Gujarat is utterly deplorable and an example of what happens when governance gets to the hands of fanatic minded individuals. What was even more painful was how Narendra Modi was protected post-Godhra incident by the party with whom he works.

US, for all the games that it has played around the world, has virtually no authority to credit or discredit any government for its policies or actions. Let it first look at itself. Recent incidents have shown much to the world that has left their own governance system in wanting! Moreover, the way they have befriended nations or did otherwise, based on their own aspirations of world dominance in the name of guidance is a subject that can be debated without an end. Extreme acts of violence rocking the world today are largely results of pretence based bureaucracy.

Religious inclusion... they speak of it... what do they have to show for themselves? POTA removed in India. Good for India. They say its good. I dont need them to say it. Moreover, they do not have a right to say it. Do they themselves practice it? In the name of national security, they engage in practices that cannot be even described in print. It is a shame for humanity and abject violation of human rights. Those who live in glass houses do not pelt stones at other's homes.

I love my country and what is happening here is purely India's concern. No credit or discredit need to be given. No actions can be taken by any other foreign nation for activities upon one's own land. Better still, US should learn from us and practice in their land. It would be good for them!

Akshardham Temple, New Delhi

Monument of Akshardham

The Akshardham monument, built without steel, is entirely composed of sandstone and marble. It consists of 234 ornately carved pillars, 9 ornate domes, 20 quadrangled shikhars, a spectacular Gajendra Pith (plinth of stone elephants) and 20,000 murtis and statues of India's great sadhus, devotees, acharyas and divine personalities.

The monument is a fusion of several architectural styles of pink stone and pure white marble. Pink stone symbolizes bhakti (devotion) in eternal bloom and white marble of absolute purity and eternal peace. The monument was built after over 300 million man hours of services rendered by 11,000 volunteers, sadhus and artisans.

It is the one of the wonders of the modern world, and the wonders of modern India.

Pictures and more information at REDIFF

PS: What I do not clearly follow is that "How does a Hindu temple become a monument to World Peace?"... Such elaborate opulence in stone, was it really necessary to spend such vast amounts in creating such a monument? Yeah, it is only a monument*1 and not a temple. Would it not have been better to spend all the amount on actual humanitarian causes? I know I am going to draw flak from some people because of my comment. But, I welcome it.

*1: Archeological Survey of India defines all those structures which were built with a religious intention but are no longer being used as a place of worship as "monuments".

Thotta-Churungi a.k.a Mimosa

Mimosa. "Thotta-Churungi" in Tamil. Grows in higher altitudes, where it can get abundance of water to grow and enough bright sunshine, and most importantly... clean air. The most notable aspect that we all know about it is that it responds to stimuli (touch/disturbance) by closing itself as if it wants to protect itself.

What I did not know all this while was that it is a flowering decoration plant. This picture was clicked on the wayside beside a farm near Kunigal on NH48 from B'lore to Hassan. You can see new leaflets and blossom buds growing at the apex. The flower itself is a treat to the eyes, light pink in colour and having a pin cushion like appearance, approx 1 inch in diameter. Sometimes there is a cluster of 3-4 such flowers together, which give the plant a very "happy" appearance.

Want to know more about Mimosa Pudica (botanical name)? Check this link.

Will India win tomorrow? Looks like it is a batsman's pitch out there...

Gauri @ 2 months.

Gauri is now 2 months old. The little darling is pretty active and beginning to create new sounds for different responses. She has a different cry for her mom, and different cry for her grand-mom. She will follow her mother in and out of the room. When needing to be cajoled, she will look at Suja and looking longingly and then cry out... and when cradled in her arms, will show that ultimate contended look! Say... kids are born smart these days. Child is the father of Man - so quoted William Wordsworth. Our daugher is already proving to be our mother! :-) No wonder I heard some father lament at his daughter "Chup Ho Jaa, Meri Maa!" :-))

Did you know so much about Chicory?

Chicory. The very word reminds us of coffee. Well, we South Indians, have mostly known it as the additive to pure coffee to make it more bitter. There is so much more to it than just that 10-30% addition to the daily morning brew.

Check this article that appeared on the Hindu today. The Hindu : Metro Plus Bangalore / Health : More than a coffee blend

I recently had the opportunity to drive through Sakleshpur and Balehonnur in Karnataka. These places are vast coffee plantations. Sakleshpur was labelled as God's gift to Coffee. When you go through these parts of the country, you would not wonder why it is called so. Every square inch of the land has been cultivated as a Coffee Plantation.

Alongside coffee, pepper, cardamom and arecanut ("paakku" in tamil) are also grown.

Coffee blossoms are white in colour. I did not get to see the blossoms. The berries then appear on the branches of the tree. Greenish in colour at the beginning, they become yellower and then finally become reddish. They are harvested when they become a dark shade of maroon.

After harvesting they go through an elaborate process - which is really out of scope of this post. :-)
